Delhi University student, Nauman Rafiq, has alleged that his father and his sister were not allowed at an Oyo hotel in Delhi after they revealed that they were from Kashmir.
The hotel apparently stated that as per police orders, guests from Jammu and Kashmir "are not allowed to check-in".
Nauman Rashiq told India today.in that the Aasha Residency hotel staff told him that "people from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are not allowed as per Oyo's policies." However, when Nauman said that he is a resident of Jammu and not from any of the three mentioned countries, the hotel authority said that there are orders from the police to not "allow Kashmiri residents to check-in".
The hotel is located in Delhi's Vijay Nagar area.
Nauman also said that the hotel did not even care to check his father’s ID before rejecting them. He said, "They did not even ask for my father’s ID, they just said that you are from Kashmir, and we have orders from the police to not allow people from Jammu and Kashmir, we are justcomplying with the orders.
The issue gained attention on social media, and people started tagging Oyo, who apologised to Nauman for the inconvenience and has promised to dig deeper.
India today.in contacted the Oyo customer care, and the Escalation Executive Manager Pradeep Kumar told us that Oyo has no policy stating that Kashmiri residents cannot be allowed check-in. He further saidthat he would escalate the matter further and would resolve the issue.
Indiatoday.in also contacted Station House Officer, Karan Singh Rana of the Mukherjee Nagar Police said. He completely refuted the claim and said that the guests were not able to provide original documents, and that the issue had no connection with them being from Kashmir. He further said that there is no such rule or verbal order on people from Kashmir.
However, Nauman said that his father had four original documents with him, but they were not asked for by the hotel. And immediately after they said that they are from Jammu and Kashmir, the hotel staff rejected them entry. Nauman also added that his father has been a decorated officer of the government there.
India today.in tried to get in touch with the hotel, but theywere not available for comment. However, in a video recording of the call with hotel manager Rahul Gautam, he could be heard telling Nauman about the 'verbal orders'. The Print got a quote from the Hotel manager Rahul Gautam. The Print quoted him as saying, "During one of the checks, a beat police officerver bally told us that while the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests are going on and the Shaheen Bagh issue remains, we should not allow customers from Kashmir and Ladakh.
However, this was refuted by Oyo. There are indeed some hotels stating that citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh will notbe allowed, but no such policy has been mentioned about Kashmiri residents.
